What is required to become a pilot in Canada? How much does it cost?

I created a multimedia view of the step by step process of becoming a licensed PPL pilot in Canada.

Cost of the PPL is around $10,000CDN. Some schools will tell you the cost is much lower based on the Transport Canada required minimums, which I believe are virtually impossible to get by with.

I can confirm with real data what you suggest here. The cost for me to obtain the PPL will be really close to the 10K mark. Here is a breakdown if you're interested.

I have been tracking all costs in Quicken with breakdowns based on dual, solo, books etc.

Keep on spending!

I recently saw a set of statistics on average flight times to complete different licences and ratings. I remember that it was approximately 70 hours flight time to get your private pilot licence in Canada. I am an instructor and would advise anyone planning on beginning flying lessons to find out what your school would cost for approximately 25 hours of dual time and 45 hours of solo time, then add 15% as a buffer to accomodate for changes to fuel prices, etc. It will only cost you more money to finish your licence if you start flying, and then have to stop due to lack of cash. If you finish in less time, then the worst case scenario is that you will have a bit of cash left over.
